Flying with Formula? Here's How to Get Through Security Calmly

Formula is one of the biggest worries for parents flying with a baby. Will security take it? How much can you bring? What if your flight is delayed? Here's what to know before you head to the airport.

Yes, you can bring formula through security

The TSA allows formula, breast milk, and toddler drinks in your carry-on in "reasonable quantities" for your trip. They don't have to fit the usual 3.4-ounce liquid rule or go in your quart-size bag.

Powdered formula is allowed too. Officers may screen it separately, so keep it easy to reach.

Rules can change, so check the TSA's page on traveling with children a few days before you fly.

How screening works

  1. Tell the officer at the start of screening that you have formula or breast milk.

  2. Take it out of your bag and put it in its own bin, like you would a laptop.

  3. Expect a quick extra check. Officers may X-ray it or test it. If you'd rather it not go through the X-ray, you can ask for another screening method, which may take a few extra minutes.

  4. Ice packs and freezer packs that keep milk or formula cold are allowed too.

Give yourself an extra 15 to 20 minutes at security on a travel day with a baby.

How much to bring

Pack enough for the flight, plus extra for delays:

  • Ready-to-feed bottles are the easiest on a plane. No mixing, no water needed.

  • Powder in a formula dispenser is lighter. Pre-measure each feeding so you just add water.

  • Plan for 2 to 3 extra feedings in case of a delay or a long taxi to the gate.

You can buy bottled water after security for mixing powder on board.

Feeding during takeoff and landing

Many parents feed a bottle or offer a pacifier during takeoff and landing. Sucking and swallowing can help with ear pressure. If your baby is asleep, it's fine to let them sleep.

What about formula for the rest of the trip?

This is where most parents overpack. A full can of formula, plus extra for a week, takes up real space in a suitcase.

When you book an Arrive Ready Baby box, tell us your formula brand at checkout. A sealed can will be waiting at your Chicago hotel or rental, along with diapers in your baby's size, wipes, and 2 new bottles to keep.

That means you only pack enough formula for the travel day.

Fly with just what you need

Reserve your baby box and your baby's formula will be waiting when you arrive.
